ASSIGNMENT 14

DEATH ON OUR ROADS SCRIPT– 6 MINS

Ironically, something or the other happens every day to try and stop the bloody road accidents suffered by Kenyans almost on a daily basis. The most recent activity was the donation of another speed camera to the traffic police to be used during Christmas holidays.

INSERT –

The camera was donated by Huawei Technologies under the banner of the National Road Safety programme.

INSERT –

Traffic safety is a serious problem in Kenya, with over 12,000 crashes occurring annually. Approximately 26,000 vehicle crashes are reportedly causing over 3,000 fatalities and 9,000 serious injuries. This translates to almost 35 crashes daily.

INSERT –

Two Women Representatives  Gladys Wanga of Homabay and Priscilla Nyokabi of Nyeri  county, plan to table a Road Safety motion in Parliament that would reduce the number of lives in road accidents. The two were moved by the growing number of road accidents on Kenyan roads which need to be seriously addressed through formulation and enforcement of traffic laws.

INSERT –

But what happened to Michuki traffic laws that actually proved to reduce the rate of carnage on our roads?

INSERT –

Transport Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau in September ruled out the reintroduction of the stringent Michuki rules to help reduce road accidents and deal with rogue public service vehicles. Mr Kamau said the regulations would not be brought back as some of them were no longer implementable and would go against the new plans The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has in place of allowing passengers to stand in buses.

INSERT –

It is easy to remember the grisly road accident at Ntulele along the Mai Mahiu road that claimed the lives of almost 50 people and left many more injured. The accident involved a 52 seater bus which was travelling from Nairobi to Homabay via the Mai Mahiu road near Narok town. The bus was said to have rolled many times.

INSERT –

That’s just a reminder of the many gruesome accidents experienced on our roads every other day. Has the Government done enough? Meanwhile Kenyans continue to live in fear as nobody can really tell when a fatal road accident will strike on the highways.

QUESTION 9                    Using social network to my journalistic advantage

– The use of social media by journalists could help them forge deeper bonds with users. They can collect email addresses to expand the breadth of channels through which they can content them and also journalists can can also pull demographic and interest data, helping them gain insights about who their audience is.

-Twitter and Facebook are also good tools for sourcing. You can get a  quotes from friends  that may not talk to reporters live.

-Facebook can reach out to a larger audience

When public news breaks in the country, whether that news is a plane crash, terrorist attack, earthquake, flood, mass murder or people who have seen and experienced the news event tweet about it. Although the  challenge in covering such news has always been to try to find people who witnessed the event or were affected by it. By using Twitter’s advanced search feature, I  can quickly find and connect with these people for interviews and/or for quoting or embedding their tweets in my stories.

Public figures and organizations can  use Twitter to announce news, express views and respond to people in the community. Any of these expressions can be newsworthy. I will follow the people and organizations on so that I don’t miss news as sure as if you ignore their news releases, press conferences and misstatements they make in their public speeches.

EXAMPLES OF JOURNALISTIC USE OF USER GENERATED CONTENT.

UGC  is media content that is produced by audiences. It involves users a lot, i.e the user participates and contributes to the content. From this content, as a journalist I will be able to write a good story from the content and from it also collect breaking news, new information that I might not be aware of, new sites that carry essential news or information. Because of its diversity, UGC though overwhelming, this source may be one of the tremendous popular sources  of information as it comes from different directions. The perspectives on the content is another tool that can really be helpful as I can compare this with others and come up with great content.

To promote UGC at my medium:

1.Open a link/blog where the users give their opinion freely and I will let them know this

2.Allow users to interact with me and other users through some link

3.Use incentives i.e give aways and contests, this will attract the users to participate more.Through awards of cash, merchandise, free service and even recognition, you can encourage your readers to help you generate original content–content that will help you build your business and deliver value to your visitors.

4. Another way to get some good user content, especially around new products, is to ask shoppers their opinion. For example a  retailer of  clothing could  considere a new line of women’s jeans. The retailer can  publish several photos of the new jeans on Facebook and aske followers on the social network to comment about the jeans. If a product is in fact brought in, the customer comments can be used in ads promoting the product or even as copy on the product detail page.

5.Credit the UGC by acknowledging the user.

6.Pay for the UGC when it is used for the main news.

Assignment 5.

Online journalism is a completely new idea for me. Though I have been using internet and social media very regularly, It never occurred to me  that I could use this as an effective tool for my work. I am extremely overwhelmed and I have discovered many things just from using the search engine that leads from one thing to another. above all I can publish multimedia stories online.

I think online journalism should be embraced by all journalists and everyone should know how to enrich oneself through this tool.

RNTC’s web site is a great site, it has in-depth information on the courses that are offered in this training institution. This courses are tailor made for all cadres of journalists even financial managers . The best thing about Rntc  web site is that it is easily accessible and self explanatory. I really look forward to learning more from this great course. Thank you.
